I don't usually use a cosplay name. Since I cosplay almost exclusively at conventions, I usually take at least three completely different costumes, so choosing a character name for the whole weekend wouldn't really work. I usually either answer to my name or my character name of the day.
What was your first cosplay? Why did you choose it? How do you feel about it?
My first cosplay was before I even knew the term cosplay. My sophomore year in high school, a group of friends and I dressed up as the Sailor Scouts from Sailor Moon for Halloween. That's right, my first cosplay was Sailor Moon, how stereotypical can you get?!
When and where was the last time you cosplayed?
Last weekend at Con-nooga in Chattanooga, TN.
How many cosplays have you done?
Around 11 or 12.
What is your favorite cosplay? Why?
Right now it's a tie between my Season 4 Rose Tyler that I'm working on and the female 4th Doctor costume that I threw together for last year's CrisisCon. I like my Rose costume because it's comfortable, and it's great costume for my husband to cosplay with me since I put a 10th Doctor costume together for him for last year's Dragon*Con. The 4th Doctor costume makes the list because it's so recognizable, I get to run around like a crazy person, the shoes I wear with it are incredibly cute, and I get to brag about my knitting skills since I always get asked several times where I got my scarf. I'm looking forward to another opportunity to pull that one out since I got the classic sonic screwdriver.
Who do you REALLY wanna cosplay as?
I'd really love to do any costume that requires me to wear an elaborate dress. Something along the lines of Yvaine's dark blue dress from the second part of Stardust. I'd also love to do any of the dresses from Pride and Prejudice.
How did you get your costumes?
I pulled them together largely by scavenging items, modifying found pieces, and making whatever I couldn't find from scratch if I could figure out a way to do it.
How many of your friends cosplay?
Quite a few. I don't think I could come up with an exact number but somewhere in the range of 10+
Have you ever walked around in public in your cosplay outfit?
Oh yes. I've eaten in restaurants in costume, gone to the movies in costume, gone to the bookstore for the Harry Potter midnight release in costume, and run through Target in costume.
Have people in public ever recognized you and asked for photos?
My costumes have been recognized, but I don't think I've ever been asked for photos anywhere besides conventions.
How long have you been cosplaying? How did you get into cosplay?
The first time was in high school and then I didn't pull together any new costumes until around my sophomore year in college. Three of my friends and I pulled together costumes and went to see Return of the King dressed as the four hobbits. (Also my only crossplay ever). After that we decided we'd had so much fun that a group of us made Hogwarts uniforms for the release of Goblet of Fire. About a year or so after that, I went to my first convention and I've been cosplaying regularly since then.
What did you think of it then?
When I first started, it was something that was fun to do occasionally, but not something I really wanted to spend money on.
What do you think of it now?
Now it's one of my favorite hobbies. It's a great creative outlet for me. I love constantly trying to come up with ways to improve old costumes and create new ones. I love the challenge of figuring out how to create costume pieces on a budget. I also allocate a lot more money for it now than I did when I first started. I'm a lot more confident in my costumes, as well. My best friend and I do most of our costuming work together and we're both perfectionists, so it's great to have someone that's as interested in it as I am to work on things with and to help me come up with solutions to cosplay problems that come up.
Where do you usually cosplay?
Dragon*Con is the convention that we usually focus on taking our best cosplay efforts to.
Have you ever done a cosplay skit on stage?
Not yet, maybe someday, though.
Do you plan your cosplay outfits waaay before youre meant to wear them?
Definitely. I'm usually thinking about cosplay for next year's Dragon*Con while we're still at the current Dragon*Con.
Have you ever been to a convention and cosplayed?
Obviously.
Ever have something terrible happen to your outfit?
Not beyond the usual issues: runs in tights, tangled wigs, etc.
What is the most favorite thing about cosplay?
Getting recognized and stopped for pictures. It kinda serves to validate the time you spent on your costume.
What is the worst cosplay you have done?
Probably the Sailor Moon one. Thankfully I don't have any pictures, so I can't be sure.
Got any cosplay pet peeves? If yes, what is it?
Not really, I mean, I will admit to wishing on occasion that more people would choose physically appropriate costumes, but I've never had any issues with people being rude to me, and I wouldn't ever say anything negative to anyone about their cosplay. Overall, I've found most cosplayers to be extraordinarily nice people.
Tell me about your most recently cosplay.
I just pulled together a new Steampunk look for Con-Nooga. I'll be posting photos eventually.
What are your cosplay plans for the future?
It's a secret! I've never seen anyone do this costume before, so I'm really excited to see if we can pull it off and be the only ones to have done so.
Who do you tag?
Anyone that's interested.
